Anybody up for a smile today? I sure could use one.
I seem to remember that somebody said, “The suit makes the man.” I don’t remember who said it, and Google doesn’t seem to think anybody did. But I seem to remember somebody said that.
It all started when I started to run for office. Then I started getting friend requests from a lot of places and accepting them because I need to get my name out there. Anyway, one of the guys who friended me was a man named Tyrone. I liked that he had interesting things to say. I was able to determine that he was a disabled veteran, POC, poor as a church mouse, had been homeless so he was so grateful to even have a roof over his head, but I know the part of town he is in and it is not exactly Hamptons (Cherry Hills in our neck of the woods). Then one day, he posted that his phone glass had cracked, and it made it impossible to see what he was writing, and did anybody know where he could get a computer cheap because, really, a phone wasn't a good device to try to do writing on anyway because you could only see so many words at a time. And in my closet was the computer I had used to get my PhD on. I had gotten a new one because that computer was no longer supported by Apple. It had a 15 inch screen, and you could see lots of words on it. In its day, it was top of the line because that was what I needed for the PhD work, but now it was in the way, and it wanted to be useful. So I said, is free cheap enough? It is not supported any more, but for what you are talking about, it should serve. You just have to come get it. He had a friend who could get it, and I gave it to him, and since then, we have texted some and I have coached him in his writing. He has even written a couple things here.
Fast forward to earlier this week - I think. Days get away from me now. Anyway, he posted that he had been asked to speak at a rally to save the children, an immigrant rally (The Resistance 5280 Save the Children NOW Rally/March). He is not an immigrant, but he had become disabled in the Army, protecting the way of life we had that opens its arms to immigrants ... anyway, they had asked him to speak. He was so honored by that, but he was ashamed, because he had never owned a suit, and he kept going to these things and feeling disrespectful because his clothes were shabby. I thought, he has never owned a suit? And in the process of this effort, I was to learn that some men actually don't feel complete without owning a suit. So I posted a request in my local Indivisible group, and someone volunteered a suit, and I put them in touch with each other. Except, it turned out that that suit wouldn't work. So I posted again. Here is where it gets exciting.
My campaign treasurer and her husband are immigrants from Nigeria. Her husband had a suit, and she thought it might work. So I arranged for Tyrone to meet at my house, and Esther (my treasurer) to come too. Then my campaign manager, Nita, wanted to contribute too, so she came. When Esther came with the suit, she had an amazing story to tell. Her husband had bought the suit for his nephew but never got to send it and now nephew was too big for it. The suit was unworn! It still had tags! Tyrone showed up and tried on the suit, and it was as if a tailor had made the suit for him! The fit was perfect. Then Nita got out some ties, and one was a Jerry Garcia tie. Tyrone is a huge Jerry Garcia fan. So now he has a brand new suit PLUS a Jerry Garcia tie. Nita went with him yesterday to get him socks and a shirt and undershirt, and hemmed the pants and pressed everything.
So now, Tyrone will be speaking at an rally in a suit given to him by an immigrant, defending the rights of immigrants. The title image is a picture of the event advertisement. He will be speaking in a suit that fits him as if it had been specially tailored. Love rules!
